How often does it make sense to undergo a skin cancer early recognition?
After a thorough examination, your dermatologist will inform you about risk assessment of your birthmarks. Otherwise, it makes sense to undergo skin cancer early recognition once a year, similar as during other early recognitions. If between the checkups you will find a suspicious birthmark, it makes sense to visit your dermatologist as soon as possible, also even if the last check up took place not so long ago.
When does an insurance company reimburse for a skin cancer screening? In the case you had a melanoma removed earlier, the costs for examination will be reimbursed by the insurance company as part of aftercare. This also applies in the case, you have had a birthmark removed already, which was examined under the microscope and a dysplasia was found. Otherwise, only BKK, DAK and Schwäbisch Gemündner Ersatzkasse reimburse the costs for a skin cancer screening, though this screening makes sense from a medical point of view.
After what age should I take my children for a birthmark screening? Generally, children get sick with melanomas very seldom, but it cannot be excluded. After the puberty, a regular control of birthmarks makes sense. In the childhood, congenital big birthmarks as well as considerable colour differences or different sizes of individual birthmarks should be controlled.
Which birthmarks are suspicious because of cancer? Always when an existing birthmark changes (increases in size, changes colour (darker or lighter) or changes its form (border irregularity, increase in the thickness, change of the surface) you should turn to your dermatologist for advice.
Here is the alphabet rule: A: Asymmetry

C: Colour
D: Diameter
E: Evolution
Is solarium less dangerous then the natural sun? No. In the solarium UV rays have the same wavelength, as in the sun light; accumulation of UVs rays landing to the skin in the course of life, contributes to skin aging and skin damage. There is only one type of UV rays, the difference between natural and artificial UV radition is not correct.
Should I pay a special attention to black birthmarks? Yes and no. If a birthmark suddenly turns dark, you should turn to your doctor immediately, in order to examine the spot. However, you should also see your doctor if there are birthmarks that become lighter in colour, or get lighter parts, or also red or light birthmarks that grow, itch or there are scurfs.
Are there risk factors for developing black cancer? Yes, it is known that sunburns in the childhood increase the risk to get sick with black cancer later in life.
Sun burns and long and intensive stays in the sun, whether for professional reasons (as a bricklayer or development aid worker in Africa) or for private reasons (on vacation or because of visiting solariums) increase the chances of getting sick with a so-called old skin cancer (cellular carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma). People with skin sensitive to the sun, can generally tolerate a lower sun dosis then people with dark skin, who get suntanned quickly.
Does solarium tan protect me from sunburn and from skin cancer? Tanning in a sun studio develops due to the same UV rays as the ones from the sun. Therefore, they are neither more healthy nor worse then sun irradiation. Unfortunately, it is available all year round and provides you with a supposedly healthy look; so it tempts you to accept generally higher dosis of UV-rays, then it would be appropriate for our Middle-European skin type.
